The World Orchid Conference & Show (WOC21) 10 to 14 September 2014

Our branch was given the task to build and man the 200² meter stall at the 21 st World Orchid Show at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg. This show will be the largest indoor plant and flower show ever to be held in the world.  The Cycad Society are privileged to be invited to partake in this enormous show. The show will be open to the public from 10 to 14 September 2014. It would be worth your while to visit this show even if you are as far as Cape Town. It gets held in a different country every four years, and may never return to South Africa again, the last show was in Singapore in 2010. Numerous countries and plant societies will be exhibiting at this show.

The Central Branch will be bringing out a splendid video named Cycad Heaven / Broodboom Hemel that features stunning photos of cycads in various established gardens and interviews with a few established cycad collectors. This video will be available at the WOC21 show.  Persons or businesses that would like to pledge R 2, 000.00 to have their name or business name on this DVD should supply, the following: E-mail to Tilania du Preez as soon as possible at

Tuinbesoeke te Alberton (Gauteng) – Garden visits to Alberton (Gauteng)

Sixty-five of or members were privileged to visit two beautiful gardens in the Alberton area. The first garden was that of Tienie and Jenny Pretorius. What made this garden an unforgettable experience was the immaculate detail that was given to the exhibit of each and every plant. Because the large part of the garden is in a Eskom servitude, trees may not be planted under the lines, this was a lesson to most of us, that most of our gardens have too much shade. This can be seen in the overall health of the cycads. This just goes to prove that sun is a necessity. The beds with all the plants were lifted to give more drainage which contributes to the wellness of the plants. Thank you to Jenny who laid out refreshments for us after a full morning in the sun.
We then moved to the well-established garden of Eugene and Mimi Engelbrecht. Once again the garden beds were lifted for drainage, which also gives more air to the roots. Eugene has a collection of rare plants to be seen. The garden was once again in a neat and immaculate condition. We were then entertained with a meal for kings with a spitbraai, salads, cheeses and sweets with the coffee. Mimi was the ideal host and everything was done perfectly. We would like to thank the Pretorius’s and the Engelbrechts for allowing our branch into their gardens and congratulating them both on gardens well done.

The Gardener Live Show 2014 at Pretoria National Botanical Garden (Gauteng)
